Politics

Guatemala is divided into 8 regions, 22 provinces and 331 municipalities and thus has three levels of government: National, Provincial and Municipal. Municipalities are autonomous and the authorities are democratically elected.

Guatemala has a democratic and representative government conformed by the Executive Branch (President), Legislative Branch (Congress) and Judicial Branch (Supreme Court). Each citizen has the right to vote and is free to exercise such right.

Legislative power is conferred to Congress, conformed by 158 members, who are directly elected through voting.

Guatemala is undergoing a period full of encouraging and positive changes; an optimistic environment underscoring the continuous efforts of the new government to:

  • Promote sustainable economic growth in its quest for socioeconomic development.
  • Develop values such as honesty, transparency and tolerance in every government institution.
  • Strengthen business relationships that promote and encourage new economic agreements, bringing dynamism to the country’s investment conditions.

All this is achieved through continuous dialogue and the inclusion of all the sectors of the country, in which the close relationship developed between the public and private sector constitutes a key achievement.

Álvaro Colom Argueta, is the sixth Constitutional President of the Republic elected democratically in 2007.  He is committed to the sustainable economic and social development of the country.
