Guatemala has 2 international airports: La Aurora International Airport located at a distance of 15 minutes from the capital city, and the Mundo Maya Airport, located in Santa Elena, Petén, in the northern region, which is growing and expanding thanks to the increase of the private sectors activities in such area. 

La Aurora international airport has been upgrade, with a capacity to receive 4 million passengers per year.   It handles over 160 flights per week as well as direct connections with six cities in the United States, Mexico, Central America, Peru and Spain.   With this new airport Guatemala obtained the ranking of Category 1 from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) of the United States.

The country also has 6 regional airports located in Puerto Barrios, Izabal (northeastern region), Cobán, Alta Verapaz (central northern region) Puerto de San José, Escuintla (southern region) Retalhuleu (Quetzaltenango) and Poptún, Petén (northern region).

The area of La Aurora international airport is 115 thousand square meters, 98 counters, an area with 500 meters of luggage conveyors, 24 immigration control points and a capacity to handle 22 airplanes simultaneously.

Also,  works to upgrade 17 airfields in different parts of the country are contemplated to offer a greater connectivity in the region.

Over 260 flights arrive in Guatemala each week, among which those providing direct same-day flights to over 11 countries such as the US, El Salvador, Spain, Cuba, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico, are included. Flights leaving Guatemala are mainly headed towards Central American countries and different US cities such as Houston, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington D.C.

Also, Iberia  have direct connections to and form Madrid, through them Guatemala offers different connections with Luthansa, KLM, Air France and British Airways to all Europe and Asia countries.In addition, in 2007, Continental and Taca Airlines expanded its routes to Guatemala. Now, not only flies to the capital city but also the area of Tikal, with its new direct flight from Houston, Texas to Airport in the Peten Mayan World.
