Guatemala presently has five seaports, two of which –Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios-- are located on the Atlantic Coast. The other three ports --Puerto Quetzal, San José and Champerico-- are located on the Pacific Coast. All five ports are intercommunicated through the national roadway system.
Over 30 shipping companies provide their shipping transportation service to the key ports in the world. The seaports are connected by land through well-kept infrastructure providing a traveling distance of only 420 kilometers from seaport to seaport.

Infrastructure at the seaports can tend to conventional vessels, container-carrying vessels, Roll on - Roll off, refrigerated, bulk, solid and liquid vessels, as well as cruise liners. Ocean freight carrier costs to the main ports around the world are competitive thanks to the proximity and easy access to important markets worldwide, from the Guatemalan seaports. Rates vary according to volume and load frequency.
