The telecommunications sector in Guatemala has shown a constant growth and is one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy, supported by the Law of Telecommunications of 1996.
Today, Guatemala enjoys one of the most successful privatizations of state telephone systems in the world. It offers an excellent coverage at the national level, with 97 telephones for each 100 inhabitants. In addition, there are over 18 million telephones in the country, fixed and mobile. The tariffs for cellular phones are the lowest in the Western hemisphere while the costs of international calls are among the lowest in the world. Guatemala has 20 operators of local networks and 17 operators of international ports.
